First, we are grateful and humbled by the extraordinary support that our community has shown to New Energy Economy. We set out to raise $100,000 to meet our operational expenses, and you showed up to help us exceed that goal. In four weeks we raised $100,599! Your confidence in us, your care for New Mexico and for Mother Earth, and your determination to stand up against corporate exploitation and destruction has truly inspired us as we begin this new year with a daunting set of challenges ahead.
We are ready to go on offense against oil and gas industry abuses. We are ready to continue our strategic defense against utility malfeasance and false climate solutions. We are ready to continue together with you in the struggle to expose the truth and demand accountability from New Mexico politicians and leaders!
Next week we will share our legislative priorities and analyses of some of the many climate related bills coming in the legislative session, but today our hearts and minds are with friends and family in Los Angeles who are facing unimaginable losses, grief and hardship.
What is happening in Los Angeles right now is not a "natural disaster," it is a crime perpetrated by corporate oil and gas executives and their henchmen. These people knew the harms their product would cause and they have been lying, deflecting and paying off policy makers around the world for decades to delay a transition away from fossil fuels. As climate scientist Peter Kalmus shared in his heartbreaking op-ed in the NY Times today:
Nothing will change until our anger gets powerful enough. But once you accept the truth of loss, and the truth of who perpetrated and profited from that loss, the anger comes rushing in, as fierce as the Santa Ana winds.
We share below a song recorded and shared today in the Hartmann report:
They walk in suits, heads held high,On private jets, they touch the sky.Big Oil CEOs, their profits swell,While Earth descends into a fiery hell.Their hands hold fortunes, their hearts hold lies,Ignoring the floods, the smoke-filled skies. They knew the risks, they knew the score,Yet chose the profits, and waged this war.
The Climate Killer CEOs,With every deal, the damage grows. They poisoned seas, they scorched the land,And left destruction in their hands. The truth was clear, they turned away,And now the world begins to pay.
They heard the warnings, loud and clear,But buried the truth so none could hear. They silenced science, spread deceit,While the oceans rose beneath our feet.Spin doctors danced, denial sold,A world on fire, the future cold.Think tanks schemed, truth erased,All to keep their wealth in place.
They called it freedom, they called it growth,But stripped the Earth of its sacred oath. The fires rage, the storms won’t cease,Their legacy’s written in ash, not peace.
Will justice rise, will the tide turn back?Or will greed keep us on this burning track? The people are calling, the planet cries,Will we hold them accountable for all the lies?
The Climate Killer CEOs,With every deal, the damage grows. They poisoned seas, they scorched the land,And left destruction in their hands. But we’re the ones who’ll rise and say,Their reign of terror ends today.
The Climate Killer CEOs,Their time is up, the whole world knows. It’s time for truth, it’s time for change,To heal the wounds, and break these chains.
So let us sing together, and let our anger rise and grow more fierce, more powerful, more overwhelming than the wind itself. Together we will break these chains.
TO BEGIN WE CELEBRATE ONE SMALL VICTORY FOR JUSTICE
Yesterday the New Mexico Supreme Court rejected the attempt by Avangrid and its overlords at Iberdrola to rewrite history and erase the evidence, testimony and findings of the Hearing Examiner, the PRC and the public who spoke out against their attempted takeover of PNM and gain control over New Mexico's energy future.
Avangrid/Iberdrola sought to rewrite history and petitioned the High Court to reopen the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (“PRC”) case after Avangrid/Iberdrola voluntarily dismissed the merger appeal for the sole purpose of striking the Final Order from the record. Avangrid/Iberdrola did not seek to revive the merger, but only to whitewash the company’s record so that other communities cannot learn from the exhaustive evidence and expert testimony the PRC relied upon when it determined that the buyout was not in the public interest and therefore denied the merger.
As reported extensively in New Mexico, the merger was denied by the PRC on December 8, 2021 after the Hearing Examiner reviewed the evidence and recommended against approval due to Avangrid, and its parent company, Iberdrola’s history of poor customer service, high rates, safety violations, bad faith contracts and market manipulation in multiple countries where they operate were exposed during the original proceeding; lack of regulatory compliance in NM and other regulatory agencies was a sore spot, as was potential self-dealing that might have ultimately unfairly impacted PNM customers and potentially slowed the energy transition.
When we said we dodge a bullet we couldn’t have imagined how right we were; New Mexico is far better off without Avangrid/Iberdrola’s corporate control and destruction.
