Staff Bios
Mariel Nanasi – Executive Director and President of the Board
Adopted in 2010, Mariel led the effort to establish New Mexico’s breakthrough carbon pollution reduction program. When Governor Martinez refused to publish the rule, New Energy Economy sued her and won in the New Mexico Supreme Court. Mariel is also a civil rights and criminal defense lawyer. Additionally, she serves on the Board of the Santa Fe Art Institute. Understanding the urgency of a changing climate and wanting to create a healthy and sustainable future for our children, Mariel has made a personal and professional commitment to climate leadership.
Lilia Diaz – Outreach Director
She was born and has spent most of her life in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She graduated from the New School University in New York with a B.A. in Social and Historical Inquiry in 2007. Through her experiences in New York, time in Africa and involvement in community organizations, she has developed a passion for social activism. She has worked with a broad range of organizations, including Chainbreaker Collective and Youth Works, which prioritize empowering economically disadvantaged people of color and youth. She wants to work towards achieving environmental justice through grassroots campaigns and broader policy initiatives in New Mexico.
Anna Marie Rondon – Native Outreach Director
Anna is Dine (Navajo) Kinyanni (Towering House Clan) and born for Nakai Dine (Mexican Clan) and resides on a ranch in Chichitah, NM. Anna has 30 years of experience in community planning and community development, grant writing, social/environmental justice issues and ten years of volunteer work on Gulf War Veterans health concerns. Her community planning/development are based on years of research and interviews with elders and the study of sustainable community development practices throughout the world. Anna represents New Energy Economy on green jobs/economy throughout Navajo country and she is a board member of the Navajo Green Economy Coalition
Bryan Watchman – 2011 Summer Intern
Bryan is an 18-year-old graduate of the Santa Fe Indian School. He was born in Window Rock, Arizona but has spent the majority of life in Santa Fe. He was a summer intern with New Energy Economy and will attend Luna Community College in the fall.
