How Will Climate Change Impact New Mexico's Natural Systems?

Avree Koffman

The effects of global climate change on our natural ecosystems in New Mexico have direct consequences for business.

lakeWhat are some of the potential effects of global climate change on natural systems in New Mexico?

  • Hotter, drier weather could increase the frequency and intensity of wildfires and prolong the fire season.
  • Insufficient oxygen in deeper, cool water in late summer will lead to the loss of important species.
  • Decreased precipitation will eliminate many of the smaller water bodies and the aquatic communities in New Mexico.
  • There will be more rain and less snow during the winter, leading to drought that impacts New Mexico’s aquifers, rivers, streams, and lakes, and the stability of soil.
  • Year-to-year variability in precipitation can impact an ecosystem and lead to emergence of an infectious disease potentially lethal to humans, such as the Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome outbreak in the southwestern United States.

How will climate change impact businesses in New Mexico?

  • Scenic views of New Mexico’s natural beauty draws thousands of visitors and revenue annually. Increased levels of air pollution will compromise New Mexico’s unique views and will adversely affect tourism as well as the quality of life for New Mexicans.
  • albuquerqueIncreased drought will lead to destruction of New Mexico’s aquatic ecosystems and will have vast impacts on the fishing industry and other related outdoor recreation industries.
  • Outdoor sports requiring strenuous activity (e.g., soccer, football, track, running) will need to be restricted during episodes of extreme heat or increased air pollution.
  • Loss of natural resources means fewer goods that may be produced and harder times ahead for businesses.
  • The recreational value (e.g., sport hunting, wildlife viewing) of species is large in market and non-market terms.
