About New Energy Economy

IntroductionAspen looking up

New Energy Economy is dedicated to solving global warming and transforming our economy to one powered by clean energy and grounded in justice.

New Energy Economy was established in 2004 to form new partnerships with diverse allies to advocate both for global warming solutions and a more equitable energy system.

We have prioritized work with under served communities - helping to develop renewable energy projects on tribal lands and in rural New Mexico. We have helped educate the public and policy makers about a just energy policy, specifically advocating over the past two years for a "cap and dividend" approach to federal climate legislation.

Scientific Context

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Emily CogginsChange (IPCC)  - a panel of 1200 well respected scientists from throughout the world, has determined that vast areas of the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Siberian permafrost are melting and that dramatic changes in global sea levels are imminent if global warming emissions are not dramatically reduced in the coming years. The IPCC has recommended a 25% reduction of global warming emissions below 1990 levels by the year 2020.

Opportunity

New Mexico is now in a unique position to advance global warming policy in theWind turbine construction United States.  The state is the first with an economy based heavily on the fossil fuel industry to address global warming, and New Mexico Senators Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman are shaping federal policy.

In Washington DC, there are many politically popular energy and climate plans competing for attention. Yet despite substantial progress, we do not yet have a package of policy solutions with the elements necessary to transform our society quickly enough to prevent dangerous climate change.
